Giant Bubble Games

Backyard games and challenges that keep kids outside for a whole afternoon.

Giant bubbles aren't just something to watch — they're something to play with. With a BubbleStix® wand and a bucket of solution you can turn any backyard, birthday party, camp, park, or family gathering into a giant bubble games session. These six bubble activities for kids need almost no setup, scale from toddlers to teenagers, and keep kids outside long after they'd normally wander back in.

How to Get the Best Bubbles First

The games only work when the bubbles do. Before you start, run through this quick setup:

  • Humidity over 30% is a good starting point.
  • Wind under about 12 mph is preferable.
  • Keep the wind at your back.
  • If there isn't enough wind, walk backward to create airflow.
  • Mix BubbleStix® formula exactly according to the package instructions.
  • Dip the BubbleStix® sticks while closed.
  • Lift them out while closed and let them drip for 2–3 seconds.
  • Raise them while still closed, then open them wide and catch the wind.

For the full breakdown of conditions and why they matter, see Bubble Science Explained.

Game 1 — Bubble Limbo

Create a large bubble horizontally across the playing area. Players take turns trying to limbo underneath the bubble without touching or popping it.

  • How to create the bubble: Dip and open the wand low and wide so the film stretches out as a horizontal curtain rather than a rising bubble.
  • How to play: One player makes the bubble; the others line up and duck under one at a time. Anyone who pops it is out.
  • Make it harder: Lower the bubble each round.
  • Winner: The last player still under the lowest bubble.

Bubble limbo is the giant bubble game kids ask for first, because it mixes a bubble with a contest they already know.

Game 2 — Round Bubble Challenge

The goal: see how many round bubbles you can make from a single dip.

Once the bubble is moving gently, slowly close the ropes. Each gentle close pinches off a round bubble that separates and floats away. Open, let the wind refill the film, then close again — repeat until the rope runs dry.

Our record is 23 round bubbles from a single dip. That's the bar to beat.

  • One dip per player.
  • Count every successfully separated round bubble.
  • Highest number wins.

Game 3 — Bubble Inside a Bubble

Make a small bubble first, then carefully build a larger bubble around it and close the larger bubble so both stay intact.

  • Why it's hard: You need enough film to make a second bubble while the first is still floating, and you have to open and close gently enough to leave the first one untouched.
  • Make the first bubble small: A quick, tight close sends a small bubble drifting up just in front of you.
  • Build the second bubble: Re-dip (or use the film still on the rope), open wide around the first bubble, and close slowly so the outer bubble seals it in.
  • Challenge format: Give each player three tries — a successful nested bubble counts as a win, and the cleanest one takes the round.

Game 4 — The Bubble Donut

The goal: create a large bubble that completely circles a person, making a "donut" or ring-shaped bubble around them.

Stand the person in the middle of an open space. Starting from one side, dip and open the wand low, then walk a slow circle around them so the film wraps all the way around and meets back up.

This needs space and careful movement — the operator has to move smoothly while the person in the center stays still. The goal is to create the bubble around the person, not to have anyone run through or intentionally break it.

Game 5 — Biggest Bubble Contest

A straightforward giant bubble competition.

  • Give everyone the same number of dips.
  • Each player creates the biggest bubble possible.
  • Decide how to judge it consistently — height, length, or overall size.
  • Biggest single bubble wins.

Under the right conditions and technique, giant bubbles can exceed 20 feet. For what goes into making bigger bubbles — wand choice, weather, and walking technique — see The Ultimate Guide to Giant Bubbles.

Game 6 — Longest-Lasting Bubble

Challenge players to create a bubble that stays intact for the longest time.

  • Start each player with a fresh dip.
  • Create the bubble.
  • Start a timer once it is fully formed.
  • The longest-lasting bubble wins.

Humidity, wind, temperature, shade versus sun, and bubble-film thickness can all affect bubble life. We won't re-explain the science here — the Bubble Academy has a dedicated Bubble Science article on why bubbles pop.

Make It a Giant Bubble Tournament

Run all six as a single event. Award points for each:

  • Bubble Limbo
  • Round Bubble Challenge
  • Bubble Inside a Bubble
  • Bubble Donut
  • Biggest Bubble
  • Longest-Lasting Bubble

Add up the points and crown an overall Giant Bubble Champion. It's the easiest giant bubble party idea we know — one bucket of solution, six events, and an afternoon that fills itself. It also works as a run of bubble activities for camps, schools, and outdoor programs.

Tips for Better Bubble Games

  • Use the right weather conditions.
  • Keep the wind at your back.
  • Give everyone equal attempts.
  • Have plenty of bubble solution available.
  • Give younger children simpler challenges.
  • Let older kids try the more difficult techniques.
  • If the ropes become tangled, point the BubbleStix® sticks downward to help straighten them.
  • Once mixed, BubbleStix® formula lasts approximately 2–3 days.

Giant Bubble Games FAQ

What are some fun giant bubble games for kids?

Bubble limbo, the round bubble challenge, a bubble inside a bubble, the bubble donut, the biggest bubble contest, and the longest-lasting bubble. All six need a giant bubble wand and a bucket of solution, and they scale from younger children to teenagers.

What is the best weather for giant bubble games?

Humidity over 30% and wind under about 12 mph. Keep the wind at your back, and walk backward to create airflow when the air is still.

How do you make giant bubbles?

Mix BubbleStix® formula as instructed, dip the closed sticks, let them drip for 2–3 seconds, raise them, open them wide with the wind at your back, and walk backward if there's no wind.

How do you make a bubble inside a bubble?

Make a small bubble first and let it drift, then open the wand wide around it and close the outer bubble slowly so it seals the first one inside. It takes a gentle hand and a little practice.

How do you make a giant bubble last longer?

Pick a humid, calm time of day, stay in the shade, and use a formula made for giant bubbles. See our Bubble Science article for why bubbles pop and what slows them down.

What can you do with a giant bubble wand?

Make giant bubbles — and play games with them: limbo, contests, nested bubbles, and full tournaments. For choosing a wand, see our Best Giant Bubble Wand guide.

Ready to play?

Every BubbleStix® giant bubble kit ships with the wand and the formula together, so you can run all six games the same afternoon you open the box.
